Kiss Your Security Deposit Goodbye
* Avoid renting with this company at all costs. They will find a way to eat up your entire security deposit to renovate the unit for the next renter. Our experience: My wife and I were residents with Toonen for 4 years. After our first year, we decided to switch to one of their newer properties with little to no issue. The only thing charged against our deposit was the mandatory carpet cleaning fee. We were praised for how clean/move in ready our previous residence was. At the next property... (Sand Lake) management was extremely overbearing. Property wide messages reminding people of what can and can’t be put outside/on your porch, harassment about vehicles, property wide text threats that you can be fined $50 for taking your trash out and leaving it in the pile outside of the dumpsters due to the property having 4 total dumpsters for 100s of units (instead of thinking logically and either adding more dumpsters or having the garbage company come and additional time a week), rents of the units going up over $100 annually, etc. Once we had enough and put our notice in that we would not be renewing our lease they made the process a hassle and we had to pay an additional month’s rent even after we turned in our keys. (There is a clause in the lease that it has to be 60 days or two full calendar months so please be careful people). They agreed to list the apartment right away, but after talking with the office we felt as if they pushed renters to other units that they had vacancies in rather than our unit. Now the biggest issue - our final security deposit. First of all, we had not heard anything on our security deposit for over a month after we moved out (moved out in September but still had to pay through October so technically it was still within the lawful amount of time). Our first correspondence from them was a letter claiming we owed them $ or they would be sending us to collections. We had not received any sort of breakdown of the security deposit charges. My wife and I go into the office and confront them on this, and they claimed that we were mailed the breakdown a week before they sent out the collection letter, which again we never received. So they give people less than a week to pay their BS security deposit charges before sending them a threatening collection letter. Breakdown of the charges: My wife and I spent a lot of time cleaning the unit. It was definitely not perfect, but they found a way to supposedly find 6 hours worth of things to clean (
