Oconomowoc exhibits the best of Wisconsin's lake country. The city's name is loosely derived from the Potawatomi word for "waterfall," which is fitting, considering the area's location on pristine waters, including Oconomowoc Lake. Incredible historic homes located on the shores of the many lakes show off the area's past. The lakes are a hotspot for activity all year round, even in the Wisconsin winters. You can find locals sledding or ice skating (typically on the smaller bodies of water) during the colder months and boating, swimming, and fishing during the summer. The city features an active community, one that comes together for annual events including the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts, Moonlit Movies, Gallery Night, and many holiday parades. The historic downtown area is centered on Wisconsin Avenue and houses diverse local restaurants, shops, bars, and more, all steps from the water. There are new apartments cropping up all around Oconomowoc, but there are long-standing homes and other rentals available as well. Milwaukee is just a 30-minute drive east.
