The worst possible option for student housing
My time at The Cloisters has been unprofessional, stressful, and expensive. Here's a few reasons why:
- The management at Cloisters are incompetent and predatory. They are however, experts in taking advantage of students and inexperienced tenants.
- Most months involved a new battle with the leasing office over extra charges to my account, and/or trying to fix broken appliances or keys that malfunctioned. They will quietly place new charges on your account on the last day of the month, and... will charge a late fee the next day should the new charge not be paid by then, giving you as little time as possible to dispute the charge with them before you are charged. You will have to constantly monitor your account for these random charges they will "automatically enroll" you in.
- False advertising, promising new tenants amenities before they are even remotely close to being built and available to use. Rooms are falling apart on the inside, shortcuts are blaringly obvious with most of the infrastructure, whole baseboards and pieces of the cabinetry regularly just fell off, flooring was very shoddy especially in corners of the kitchens and bathrooms. The property itself and the rooms were vastly different than the pictures they advertise on the website.
- Appliances were cheap and ineffective. Bedrooms didn't come with lights, we had to purchase those ourselves. Washer and dryer combo would take at least 2 cycles to work properly. Ice maker never worked, and staff never got around to replacing it during my lease. Roaches were not properly sprayed for, you can expect to see plenty in your apartment while your here.
- The management had a very poor understanding of the leasing process making it very hard to get any questions answered before I signed with them.
- Leasing office closes up earlier than posted hours very often making it very hard to talk to them in person and resolve any disputes efficiently.
- Cleaning staff has been caught stealing from our room. If your valuables/electronics don't have GPS tracking capabilities then keep them locked up while your not in the room.
Here are a few good qualities about cloisters:
- Short, easy walk to UM campus
- Fun events and contests are hosted at the leasing office most weekends for residents
I do not recommend anyone live here.
