This is as close to perfect as I've gotten in a rental
Elevation is an excellent property and enjoys a number of inherent advantages that help it to rank highly among the seven different apartments I have occupied. Completed in early 2019, the units are spacious and the wood-frame construction solid. There are tons of electrical jacks and the units are ideal for today's technologic, even post-pandemic lifestyles. The location is also ideal: with free parking, Elevation is situated on the border of the part of Boston that one accesses by train and... foot and the outskirts that are best accessed by car. Those who are moving to the Boston area with a car will not feel pressure to give it up.
The following characteristics of the units should be known to prospective renters, but bear in mind that all of these things factor into an overall "excellent" rating.
- Sound: the windows are very insulative, which suggests that they will hold heat in during the Massachusetts winters. Walls are good, too. However, the wood frame construction can conduct sound through the floor if your upstairs neighbor walks with heel strikes. It's no worse than any other wood frame construction, however: just know what the units are made of. The main room's central AC / heating system is powerful, but tends to activate with many short bursts to maintain a given temperature and is rather loud. Closing the bedroom door will be sufficient for most sleepers.
- Shelf and closet space: there is adequate but not plentiful closet space. As for shelving, the kitchen has ample cabinetry and the high ceilings provide more useful storage space above the cabinets. However, the bathrooms have very little cupboard space, no medicine cabinet, and not a lot in the way of places to hang a towel. An over-the-door towel rack will go a long way to fixing the problem, but I did invest in a standing vanity cabinet.
- Floor plans: the leasing agents are very helpful and will provide PDFs of each apartment. Study them carefully, as some of the units (the largest "E1" one-bedrooms making up the "elbows" of some buildings) have an odd shape that may not be the simplest to furnish. I have an E1, and found a good way to do it, but it involves some clever placement of the TV and a bit of a woodworking project to ensure that I can do it aesthetically and without putting too much into the drywall.
- Package receiving: every property will have its teething problems, and this is one for sure, but I've been assured that a better system is in the works.
