How Is This Rating Determined?

9/1/15

Midtown Detroit has become expensive.

Let me start off by saying that I very much like living so close to my college campus. However, apartment itself is very small, but it's not terrible.
The building is 95 years old and it shows in certain areas. The old radiators can leak, the floors in every unit seem to bow in the middle. Some units still have the original windows. The kitchen (in most units) is nearly nonexistent and the bathroom is extremely small. Part of the ceiling in the hallway once fell out.
They are currently charging...
around $650 for a 350 sq ft studio, which is more than any student could afford nor is the apartment worth that much. It's a hassle to get maintenance to come and fix things that need addressing. The owners don't believe they have to notify a tenant if they schedule a showing or maintenance appointment (this is actually illegal).
The only reason I give this place two stars is because of location. If you are a student at Wayne State and are in somewhat desperate need of a place to live, this place is a short walk, 10 minutes at most if you're headed across campus. Otherwise, I would advise against renting at the Phoenix.
