Management will lie to you
On moving into the apartment the bedroom windows did not have screens and with the poor airflow of the unit opening windows frequently was very important. Before signing the lease I spoke to management about getting screens installed, they told us that they would be able to do that within the first month after move in.
6 months in they gave us several screens, none of which fit any windows in the unit properly, and told us to install them ourselves. This was better than literally nothing in the... windows but there was a 2 inch gap between the screen and the window frame so it certainly didnt stop the large stink bug infestation in the area from making our apartment a disaster. We were told at this point to wait until a 'vendor change' could be completed before we could get properly fitted windows. I followed up on this every month for the next 12 months, always being told it would be within the next month. At time of move out they never replaced them.
A little over a year into living here our downstairs neighbor had their roof cave in due to water damage caused by a leak in our units plumbing. This left us without running water in our kitchen for 7 days and no dishwasher while waiting for a replacement for 6 weeks.
The most frustrating experience of all though happened on move out day. I brought a couple people over after we had moved everything out of the apartment to clean the unit, when we were wrapping up I went to ask to property manager to inspect the unit as if there was something we missed when cleaning I would have liked to make sure we got to it. She was immediately confrontational, upset that we didn't have the movein paperwork that we had returned to the office after filling out when we moved in (a little hard for us to have on hand something they required us to turn in) and that 'everyone is always upset when then come to talk to her'. After some convincing she came to inspect the unit, walked through the rooms, and told us that everything was fine and she expected we would get out deposit back. Taking her word at face value we packed up and left. A few weeks later we received our deposit check, billed for an absurd amount of cleaning time. When pressed about this over the phone the same manager that inspected our unit and told us that it was fine told us that they dont keep any record of what actually gets cleaned and just billed us for the hours the cleaner billed them.
