A mixed bag

I have lived at St. Clair for a little over a year. The staff is okay based on their mood for that day. The walls are THIN. I wake up hearing my neighbor using the restroom :( I can hear my other neighbor's dogs run around above me. There are storefronts on the first floor of the building. Owners and visitors double park in front of the building. Another owner regularly has verbal and physical altercations on the street. Children from the bus hub or from a nearby school REGULARLY fight in front... and on the side of the property. Not to mention some units have a roach or mice problem. The location is prime and the rent is lower than the newer apartments in Downtown Dayton which is reflected in the "amenities" provided. I have had my car broken into 2 times while living here. Smells like urine near the entrance as people allow their dogs to urinate on the large plant pots. Needless to say I will move as soon as I get approved for a home loan.

Great gem in downtown

I lived here the past year and I believe its the best option for Downtown Dayton. While downtown Dayton is not a booming metropolitan area like Chicago or Columbus, downtown businesses are growing and St Clair is right near them. Without even crossing the street you have a studio gym (barre, TRX), boutique, and a cupcake shop. Just down the block is Oregon District, which has restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and boutiques.

The apartment itself is hip, the tall ceilings and floor to ceiling...
windows are great. I lived in a unit with new windows and linoleum "wood" flooring. The color scheme was easy to adapt to my personal style. Having in-unit laundry and a trash chute on my floor was very convenient. I always felt safe, as the building is secured entry. Everyone who works here is super friendly--they learned my name within weeks and always greeted me cheerfully. Maintenance issues were always resolved quickly. The walls are pretty thin, but what can you expect from an old building.

If you know you want to live downtown despite the cons of the area, then St Clair is the place to be!

Great Place to Live

I've lived in the St Clair Lofts for about a year now. It's a seriously great community to live in. The location is wonderful for anyone that wants to be in the middle of downtown. The oregon distric is incredibly close by and there is always something going on downtown to keep you busy. It is true that the walls are thin, but I've been very fortunate to have great neighbors that will quiet down when asked. The office staff are great. There has been some turnover in complex managers since my year... here, but they've always been very friendly and helpful. Maintenance usually get everything taken care of as quickly as possible. The front desk is always a pleasure to walk by. You will almost always get a friendly greeting from the front desk employees. The people that work the front desk are always quick to help with any issues and are very easy to talk to. The one thing that can be taken negatively is that the lofts do tend to feel like a college dorm. There tend to be weekend partiers. But overall I have loved my time at the St Clair Lofts.

Positives and Negatives at the St. Clair Lofts

These apartments look very cool and have huge windows that overlook downtown! I have lived here for two years and have mixed feelings about the place, but I don't regret living here. The positives are that the neighbors are extremely friendly and social and can be found hanging out in the courtyard on any given night. All of the units seem to have their own unique style and anytime I ever have guests over everyone loves the place. The location is perfect and within walking distance to anything... you want to do downtown- I have friends over every weekend because it is within walking distance to Oregon District and many other bars. The maintance guy is pretty fast about fixing issues in the apartment. The negatives are that these apartments can be pretty expensive with the utility bills (our electric bill is usually between $70- $100 a month, and we are pretty conservative when it comes to using electric), you have to pay for monthly parking, and the only internet/cable service provider that you can get is Time Warner Cable - in both units I lived in the internet goes in and out and sometimes the internet does not work in the bedroom farthest away from the router, and it is $65 a month just for internet alone! The walls are paper thin. I can hear my neighbors conversations, I can tell you what TV shows they are watching, I can sing along with whatever song they are playing, I can hear when they are in the kitchen and the cabinets are slamming, not to mention some other private things that you just don't want others to hear, so if you are a private person or noise bothers you, this probably isn't the place for you. Lastly, cockroaches. I guess that's what you get when you move into an old building. I am an extremely clean person, I never leave dirty dishes out, and I clean on a regular basis. We had a full blown cockroach infestation.. in one of the bedrooms! We told management and it took them about a week to get an exterminator to come out and take care of the problem, which we weren't too pleased about having to live with the creepy crawlers for an extra week as they quickly multiplied. So, if you can afford these cool looking apartments and don't mind thin walls, the possibility of roaches, not so great internet, and the occasional stabbing/shooting/murder in the always empty Arby's parking lot across the street, then I would highly recommend St. Clair Lofts!
