About the Neighborhood:
Interbay, as the name implies is between two bays: Salmon Bay on the north, part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, across which is Ballard; on the south by what remains of Smith Cove, an inlet of Elliott Bay; The neighborhood which is in the valley between Queen Anne and Magnolia Hills is bordered on the East by 15th Avenue W. and Elliott Avenue W.; and on the West by Thorndyke, 20th, and Gilman Avenues W. Within easy walking distance of Crane are the following neighborhood businesses and parks:
• Interbay Golf Course and Driving Range
• Interbay P- Patch Garden
• SPU Soccer Field
• Myrtle Edwards Waterfront Park and bike path
• Across the street from
- Red Mill Burgers
- Pagliacci Pizza
- QFC
• Easy walking or bus ride to dining, Whole Foods, and the D Line and 32 Bus Route
As the Urbanist wrote: The building "resembles railway boxcars or storage containers taking design cues from the massive rail-based container transfer facility just west of the site. The facade reinforces those attributes with corrugated steel painted in a variety of warm colors. The colors emphasize the boxy form of containers and build verticality while serving to breakup the scale and bulk of the structure. Perhaps most striking in the building is the exterior staircase framed by a ribbon of mercurial orange. The framing offers the perfect opportunity to highlight the namesake of the building to passerby on 15th Ave W. Meanwhile, the architects have also implemented progressive step-backs of the structure to further reduce the weight of the building over the public realm below. Doing so has enabled space on the upper floors to be used for semi-private spaces like balconies and common gardens for residents.”
