Wait before you rent here. I've been living at the Recreation Center apartments for a few years and the building is under non-stop construction. The price for a studio (450sqft) is already higher than any in the area, although you do get your utilities included, which is nice not to think about, but that's it. There are no other amenities at all. AND you will get woken up at 8am on a regular basis. For someone who does not work a traditional 9 - 5p, this has seriously effected my life. This has... been going on for the past 4 months straight, and then intermittently for the past few years. They also have permits to do construction on Saturday mornings so good luck with sleeping in on the weekend.
So, yes: The building is cool and getting cooler as the construction gets going, the building manager is a gem and it's a 5 minute walk to Echo Park Lake.
BUT: you're constantly getting woken up and having construction workers walking trough your unit (this is almost as constant as the construction by the way), there are no amenities for the price you are paying (even parking), there is no security on duty - packages were stolen and vandalized over the holidays and it was caught on the cameras (someone literally held the front door open as someone else ran around the building stealing packages), and bugs (the building is so old - it's a given).
Only you know what your money is worth to you so if these types of things don't worry you, go for it. I just want to throw this out there because I think these units are so overpriced for what you actually get and I had a hard time finding an honest review of the building. So my advice is to wait a couple (or even a few) years before you rent here. The building will be much improved and you won't have to deal with all the commotion and non-stop hectic construction that interferes with your well-being.
