great in many ways, lacking in some
So this place is most importantly quiet! You won’t hear your neighbors blasting rap music till 4 am here, thankfully… Because they are mostly all over 80yo and in bed by 8. I LOVE living with this demographic, as it’s clean, quiet, everyone is courteous, pleasant and honestly some of the best neighbors I’ve had. You may hear the street traffic and drag races at night, as the door walls and windows are old and poorly sealed (not 3-ply Hurricane windows so not good at dampening noise) so they let... in not only drafts but all the street noise. I did find installing heavy blackout curtains and additional weatherstripping helped with both the draftyness and noise.
They, for some reason heat the building to what feels like a humid 80 degrees so even when it’s 60-70 out you’ll need to crank your AC to sleep comfortably. Luckily the cost to do that is included in the flat rate utility plan.
The pool is heated to 87 degrees (as of January 2024) from the thermometer reading from yesterday: too hot to actually enjoy IMO. But great I suppose if you find you lack hot water in your apartment like I do.
There are a lot of things to do in the building, bingo, a happy hour with live entertainment and few nights a week that is surprisingly good for a free night “out” without actually going out! There is a shuttle to local places for those that don’t drive, and therapy dogs come occasionally as well…. Many game nights, poker, bingo, other card games, some things I’ve never heard of, movie night, ice cream socials, etc… it’s like a college dorm for the elderly but they have all been so gracious to accept the younger new residents moving in, that it feels like a very welcoming small community here.
There are not exactly walking paths as I thought I had seen described, there’s a small road that goes around the property like a U, that’s basically it. But the local area has sidewalks if you want to walk to Publix or the 7-11.
It’s a good place to see the shuttle launches, once they clear the tree line they are all actually pretty close by.
My biggest complaint is that our water heater is only 28gal, for a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment, this equals one 13min and 47 second shower until the tank is empty and needs to refill and reheat. For an apartment that is a 2 bed 2 bath, this is by all standards insufficient capacity. Standard accepted calculations would indicate they need a 47 gallon or better water heater (20 gallon per person per shower + appliances that use hot water:
