Newly "Updated" Apartment Was a Nightmare
Don't ever rent here. I rented an "Updated Apartment" (new floors, new kitchen, new bathroom vanities and freshly painted) and while mopping the floor, my mop went through the baseboard and into the bathroom wall. When I pulled the rubber base board back, I found gaping 2-3" gaps in the sheetrock behind the rubber baseboard. The half bath smelled like weird. The owner said it was the fan. A month later after cleaning the vents and changing out the fan the smell was still there. He then said it... was construction related and denied it was mold. Shortly after I opened the window and my thumb sunk into the windowsill. The owner really tried to tell me it was caulk. I asked him to use a moisture reader which read off the charts with moisture. He then admitted there had to be a leak and brought in a handyman. As soon as the handyman pulled the trim off, mold was exposed. He denied it was mold. I hired a property inspector to run an indoor air test and dust sampling tests. It came back with excessively high counts of Stachybotrys Chartarum (black mold) and Aspergillus Niger along with several other toxic mycotoxin producing molds. I sent this report to the landlord, and he still denied there is mold. He agreed to change out the windows, but refused to remediate the mold in the walls, under the trim and in my belongings. All 5 windows had saturated wood and mold under the frames. One window was so saturated, the wood was soft and infested with ants and mold. Because the mycotoxin/mold counts were so high, the report also indicated that the spores were in everything I owned. I had to throw out my mattress, pillows, vacuum, all soft plastic and wood containers and utensils and cast-iron pans that were stored in the kitchen cabinets. I had to hire mold remediators to remediate everything else I owned that could be salvaged and moved out. The landlord has refused to pay for any of the costs I have incurred because of his negligence.
